GENERATIONAL END GAME (GEG)

The “Tobacco End Game” is a target set by global experts to achieve a smoking prevalence of less than 5 percent. GEG is a form of implementation to prohibit certain smoking-related activities for the Malaysian generation born on 1st January 2007, onwards. These include cigarettes, cigars, loose tobacco, snus tobacco, heated tobacco products, and electronic cigarettes. For smokers other than this designated generation, the sale, distribution, and use of tobacco products will follow the law.

When I was in my foundation year, I was assigned a project by my lecturer to organize an exhibition focusing on social issues pertaining to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Our group opted to address SDG 3: Good Health and Well-Being, and we specifically chose to delve into the matter of the 'Generational End Game (GEG)'. In addition to disseminating information to the public regarding the implementation of GEG in our nation, our objective is also to raise awareness about the hazards associated with smoking.

In the weeks leading up to the exhibition, my group and I started to find out more about GEG. Upon conducting extensive research, it has come to my attention that GEG stands out as the most optimal approach for fostering a healthier generation devoid of smoking. It is widely acknowledged that smoking poses significant threats to human well-being. Consequently, the implementation of GEG can serve as a safeguard for the younger population against the onset of chronic ailments, particularly those associated with respiratory health.

دَعْهَا عَنْكَ فَإِنَّ مِنَ الْقَرَفِ التَّلَفَ

Meaning: "Leave it (the area). Indeed, the act of getting close to evil (plague and disease) will lead to destruction". (Narrated by Abu Daud)

For the exhibition, we planned on showcasing the factual details and chronological progression of the implementation of GEG through visually appealing posters. In order to captivate the attention of visitors and entice them to explore our booth, we have devised an engaging maze game that not only entertains but also imparts knowledge about the obstacles faced during the implementation of GEG. Additionally, we have constructed replicas that vividly depict the detrimental impact of smoking and vaping on lung health, further emphasizing the importance of addressing these issues.

Throughout the day of the exhibition, each of the group members managed to deliver the information well to the visitors since we had made sure that each one of us had a comprehensive understanding of the entire concept of GEG. Most of the visitors were attracted to our replicas and maze game. After closely observing the reactions of visitors to our replicas, it has become evident that they possess a remarkable potential to impact their awareness regarding the harmful consequences of smoking and vaping on lung health.

Visitors are immediately drawn to the replicas due to its striking appearance, which vividly portrays the damage caused by smoking and vaping. The blackened, shriveled lung, covered in tar and surrounded by inflamed tissue, serves as a stark reminder of the consequences of these habits.

As visitors approach the replicas, their initial curiosity quickly transforms into a sense of shock and concern. The realistic depiction of a damaged lung prompts them to reflect on their own habits and the potential harm they may be causing to their own bodies. Most of them expressed feelings of surprise and disbelief, as they had previously underestimated the severity of the damage caused by smoking and vaping.

Meaning: “Oh man, there has indeed come to you a lesson from your Lord and a cure for the diseases (that are) in the chest and guidance and mercy for those who believe."

(Yunus verse 57).

The impact that we had on the community was truly extraordinary. Many individuals who had previously been unaware of the risks associated with smoking were now equipped with knowledge and resources to make informed decisions about their health. It was heartwarming to see the spark of motivation in their eyes as they pledged to quit smoking or support their loved ones in their journey towards a smoke-free life.

However, it wasn't just the attendees who were affected by our efforts. The event also served as a catalyst for change within our team. The sense of accomplishment and fulfilment we felt was immeasurable. We had come together, united by a common goal, and had successfully made a difference in the lives of others. The hard work and dedication we had poured into this project had paid off, and it was a testament to the power of teamwork and perseverance.

As the day drew to a close, a wave of happiness and relief washed over me. We had achieved what we set out to do – to introduce the community to GEG and spread awareness about the dangers of smoking and vaping. The impact we had made was not just a fleeting moment, but a lasting change in the mindset of the community.

In conclusion, the implementation of 'Generational End Game' plays a crucial role in safeguarding and improving the overall well-being of individuals and society as a whole. Exploring the various aspects of good health, it becomes evident that smoking has detrimental effects that hinder the attainment of holistic well-being. By advocating for the cessation of smoking and vaping, we promote a culture centered around wellness and resilience. This call-to-action urges individuals to break free from the harmful habits that compromise personal and collective health. In doing so, we pave the way for a society that is healthier, happier, and more vibrant. Taking a stand against smoking and vaping not only benefits individuals but also contributes to the creation of environments that prioritize health, thus establishing a lasting legacy of vitality for future generations.
